Opposition wins control of Zimbabwe parliament

AP/Fox News:

The latest official election results show Zimbabwe's ruling party has lost its control of parliament.

The results show the opposition Movement for Democratic Change has won 105 seats in the House of Assembly so far, while the ruling party has won 93 seats.

Zimbabwe's opposition party said Wednesday that its leader Morgan Tsvangirai has won the presidential election outright with 50.3 percent of the vote.

Movement for Democratic Change general secretary Tendai Biti says that the result means that there is no need for an election runoff against President Robert Mugabe.

It is hard to imagine that even half the voters in Zimbabwe would support a corrupt despot like Mugabe. I suspect that if the vote is as close as these results indicates it probably shows the limits of Mugabe's ability to rig the election more than any support for his misrule of Zimbabwe. That this has dragged on for days demonstrates his reluctance to let go.
