Inside the numbers of Brookings Iraq study

The Belmont Club looks at the charts and graphs that make up the Brookings study on the progress of the surge in Iraq and the lack of progress on the political front.

I think what is missing from this long report is the effect of the grass roots political changes that are taking place in Iraq that are leading to the success of the surge. On the Sheik to Sheik and street level there is a reconciliation process taking place that is under the radar screen of those looking to Baghdad for answers to the political problems. In fact the Baghdad "reconciliation" process was supposed to bring about the grass roots reconciliation that has leaped ahead of it.

Before it is too late, people in Washington and Baghdad need to recognize this reality and use it to force the changes in Baghdad rather than vice versa.

Wretchard has a long thoughtful piece that is worth the read in full.
