Kerry's antiwar speech on Iraq hurt him in latest polls

How out of touch are Democrats and liberal media types? Last week they were talking about Senator John Kerry finally finding his voice on Iraq after his speech in New York where he said the liberation of Iraq was a "profound diversion."

Kerry compounded his credibility problem this week by claiming his statements on Iraq have been consistent and clear and that he has not flip flopped on this issue. His challenge now is to try to rationalize his incoherent statements on Iraq.

His other challenge is to look strong while retreating in a rout from Iraq in the face of a weak insurgency. If he and the Democrats think the US should retreat whenever a small number of insurgence resist liberation, they make it very easy for al Qaeda to thwart US policy. Does the presence of an insurgency mean it was a mistake to liberate Iraq? Apparently Kerry and the anti war Democrats think so.

However, if you analyze the capacity of the insurgents, it is clear that they only have the power of a cockroach. They can make a mess, but they cannot defeat the US or any significant portion of Iraq. They have found sanctuary in a few Sunni towns, principally Faluja. The US has the power to isolate this city and destroy the insurgents. In fact the Marines were only a few days from accomplishing this when they pulled back for political reasons. The interim government of Iraq wants to try to remove the insurgents with fewer Iraqi deaths. While understanble, I think they are misguided. At this point they have traded the lives of innocent Iraqis in the hope of avoiding killing insurgents.

Democrats who think that the mess caused by insurgents is caused by poor planning by the Bush administration just do not comprehend how these operations occur and how they are defeated. It would be a huge mistake to retreat from Iraq just because of insurgents. In the language of bin Laden the Democrat policy would make the US the "weak Horse" inviting more attacks in other places al Qaeda would like to for us to leave.
