Romney continues to show money raising skills

Washington Post:

Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney has eclipsed other potential 2012 GOP contenders in an important milestone, raising $1.8 million in the second quarter to dole out to candidates for lower office.

On Thursday, hours before most of the figures were to be officially reported, the potential rivals disclosed the amounts their political action committees raised from April to June. Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin raised $866,000 for her SarahPAC and Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty raised $723,000 for his Freedom First PAC. Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee reported $258,000 for his Huck PAC.

Romney also gave out the most money to other candidates: $350,000 in the second quarter.

Contributing to the campaigns of other Republicans is one way potential presidential candidates collect political chits and demonstrate their ability to bring in money.

...

Romney showed these same skills in 2008, but still had to dip into his fortune to stay competitive. I suspect that will probably happen again in 2012. While I am sure his contributions to candidates is appreciated, the Palin endorsements appear to have been more valuable in the 2010 races so far. That may say something about the dynamics of the 2012 race should she get into it as it now appears she will.
