US shuts Yemen embassy after al Qaeda threat

Observer/Guardian:

Al-Qaida threats have forced the United States to close its embassy in Yemen today amid increasing concern about the roots of terrorism in the Arabian peninsula in the wake of the Christmas Day bomb plot.

A statement posted on the embassy website said the office in the capital, Sana'a, had closed due to "ongoing threats" from al-Qaida. It said the embassy sent warning last week to US citizens in Yemen urging them to be vigilant.

An embassy spokesman would not comment on whether there had been a specific threat.

...

I suspect the embassy did not want to reveal the sources and methods used to reveal the threat. However, it is likely that there was a specific threat of a plan to attack. The embassy has been attacked before by al Qaeda.

The BBC reports that the UK has also closed its embassy.

...

The embassy closures follow last week's threat by a group called al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, urging Muslims to help in "killing every crusader who works at their embassies or other places".

...
I told you they were religious bigots.
