Rose colored glasses

Gail Collins:

...

Obama is hitting another milestone this week. When Congress goes into recess it’ll be a rough half-year marker for his presidency. And things have been looking pretty good. American influence is rising abroad, and at home nobody in the White House appears to be plotting to undermine our civil rights on a daily basis.

...
Oh really? Sen John Cornyn noted just yesterday:

...

“I am not aware of any precedent for a President asking American citizens to report their fellow citizens to the White House for pure political speech that is deemed ‘fishy’ or otherwise inimical to the White House’s political interests,” Sen. Cornyn wrote. “You should not be surprised that these actions taken by your White House staff raise the specter of a data collection program. As Congress debates health care reform and other critical policy matters, citizen engagement must not be chilled by fear of government monitoring the exercise of free speech rights.”

...
Then there is Obama's failure to support those seeking justice and democracy in Iran. He is backing a despot in Honduras who ignored that country's constitution and disobeyed the orders of its Supreme Court ye Obama claims to be on the side of justice and the rule of law. How out of touch can a President be. Instead he sides with enemies of the country like Hugo Chavez.

Collins must have snoozed through that one. Her claims that the country is looking stimulated has to ignore the employment data since Obama's election and focus on a hokey money give away program for cars. I think liberals really do live in an alternate universe.

The Chicago style of politics is on display as the White House tries to gather information on opponents of their policies while insulting those who raise objection to policies.
