Mehsud probably killed in attack that killed wife

Fox News says DNA test are being run on a body pulled from the explosion. Reuters is also reporting that Pakistan thinks he may be dead.

There is a strong likelihood that Pakistani Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud was killed along with his wife and bodyguards in a missile attack two days ago, Pakistan's Interior Minister Rehman Malik told Reuters.

"We suspect he was killed in the missile strike," Malik said on Friday. "We have some information, but we don't have material evidence to confirm it."

Mehsud is a guy who needed to be destroyed. It will be interesting to see what happens with his terrorist organization and who tries to pick up his standard. Whomever that may be, they will immediately become a target.

The Telegraph says his "demise would be a major boost to Pakistani and US efforts to eradicate the Taliban and al-Qaeda."

Bill Roggio
says intelligence officials are telling him Mehsud is alive. Perhaps they have intercepted some of his communications. The Pakistani report may have also been an attempt to smoke him out.

On the other hand this ABC report says there is a 95 percent chance that Mehsud is among the dead.

The NY Times reports that communication intercepts suggest that Mehsud is dead. The Taliban are not known for their message discipline. During the early days of the war before they were drivien out of Afghanistan the Northern Alliance leaders would actually get them on the radio for some realing conversation. The NY Times story reveals that we have come close several times in recent months.

It also says that Mehsud likes to taunt Pakistani officials after these failures. I suspect he has been as taunting as a dead man in recent days.
