CBO says no savings in Democrat health plans

Politico:

For the second time this month, congressional budget analysts have dealt a blow to the Democrat's health reform efforts, this time by saying a plan touted by the White House as crucial to paying for the bill would actually save almost no money over 10 years.

A key House chairman and moderate House Democrats on Tuesday agreed to a White House-backed proposal that would give an outside panel the power to make cuts to government-financed health care programs. White House budget director Peter Orszag declared the plan "probably the most important piece that can be added" to the House's health care reform legislation.

But on Saturday, the Congressional Budget Office said the proposal to give an independent panel the power to keep Medicare spending in check would only save about $2 billion over 10 years- a drop in the bucket compared to the bill's $1 trillion price tag.

...

The math keeps crushing the fantasy of Obama's health care reform dreams. The fact is they never added up, and it should not be that surprising that the CBO would figure it out. With no savings and no hope of raising the money to pay for the expensive scheme, Obama's promise of not signing a bill that increases the deficit boxes him in to abandoning the program or breaking his promise to voters.

What is somewhat surprising is that the Democrats did not figure this out for themselves before they put themselves out on this limb. But this is the same gang that passed a massive stimulus bill that has not worked either. They seem to be a gang who believe in the power of spending. They remind me somewhat of the people who bought houses with mortgages they could not afford to pay for.

  1. I think Obama and the Democrats were not counting on the stimulus to focus Americans on the deficit. With everyone's attention on how high it is now, there is no way they can add another trillion on to it without getting thrown out of office.

Government run healthcare has been the Democrats "wet dream" for decades. With them in control of everything, they were not going to pass up the opportunity to bring it to life. Ironically, it now looks like just attempting to pass government run healthcare, is going to sink them in 2010 and 2012.
