Opponents of the US-UK Resolution at the UN
The French, Germans, and Russians are opposing the resolution stating that Saddam is not in compliance with Security Counsel Resolution 1441. They have all said that Saddam must disarm, but do they mean it? The results of a US led war against Saddam will be that Saddam will be disarmed and as an Iraqi Kurd said, Iraqi civilian casualties from such a war will be less that Saddam kills intentional on a monthly basis. The US and its coalition will bear the risk of their own casualties, not France, Germany and Russia. So what is their problem? It is regime change. They are attempting to sabotage the US effort in order to keep the murderous thug in office. They like doing business with him. They are also not serious about disarming Saddam. If they were serious it would not have taken 12 years to accomplish. They embrace inspections now only because they think it will restrain the US from taking effective actions. If they had their way they would string the inspection process out until there is a regime change in the US that would permit them to go back to their do nothing attitude. For these reasons it is proper that the US and its coalition ignore them and the UN and get on with the business of disarming Saddam before he is given any more gifts of time to seek our destruction.
Are the French and Germans Blinking?
Perhaps there is the beginning of a realization that it is not just Bush the cowboy who wants to be rid of Saddam, but also the American people. That realization will be driven home when sales of German autos decline along with Bic stick pens. It took me a while to come up with a French product besides water and wine that is actually sold here. It puts them only slightly ahead of Iraq in exports to the US. Members of Chirac's party are trying to pull him back into the real world and away from driving off the veto cliff. Chirac may try to get the Russians to do the dirty work of vetoing, but whoever does it will accomplish nothing more than proving they are not a friend of the US. The war will still happen and they will be the worse off for trying to sabotage the effort.
