Misplaced optimism

Raid touted as another example of hallmark of future U.S. missions

Raids are transitory operations that cannot hope to replace persistence operations.  Some conflicts require taking and holding real estate to deny it to an enemy and to keep an enemy from using that real estate to launch attacks of his own.

While we are obviously getting better with our raids they have limited applications and by themselves would make wars longer and more bloody.

An Iraqi citizen living in Ohio planned to transport ISIS members into the United States “who do not care if they are killed during the mission” to murder former President George W. Bush, according to court filings. Shihab Ahmed Shihab Shihab, 53, believed the former commander-in-chief was to blame for the deaths of countless Iraqis and the country’s destruction during “Operation Iraqi Freedom.” Shihab pled guilty last year to attempting to provide material assistance to terrorists and was sentenced in February to more than 14 years in jail for the scheme, which was detailed in court documents. Oil prices rise in the wake of Syrian missile strike

Bloomberg/Fuel Fix: Oil jumped as the U.S. cruise-missile attack against Syria roiled global financial markets. Futures in New York and London surged more than 2 percent to the highest in a month. The strike early Friday morning targeted hangars, planes and fuel tanks at one Syrian military airfield, according to a U.S. official. Syria borders Iraq, OPEC’s second-biggest crude producer. The news rippled across financial markets, with the yen and gold advancing as stocks declined. “It seems today’s spike is just a knee-jerk reaction to the missile strike,” said Thomas Pugh, a commodities economist at Capital Economics. “Syria produces little oil itself so the spike probably reflects the risk of increased tensions between the U.S. and Russia or Iran.” Oil had struggled to extend a rally beyond $51 a barrel as concern over surging U.S. supplies countered optimism around a possible extension to production cuts led by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.
