A woman out of control dies handcuffed in cell

CNN:

An autopsy was planned Monday for a 45-year-old mother of three who died in police custody at Phoenix's Sky Harbor International Airport.

Carol Ann Gotbaum was arrested at the airport Friday for alleged disorderly conduct, said Phoenix Police Department spokesman Sgt. Andy Hill.

Police handcuffed Gotbaum with her hands behind her back and took her a holding cell, where she was later found dead, said Hill.

Police "found her with the handcuffs up by her neck area," Hill said. Gotbaum was unconscious and police and firefighters tried to revive her by CPR and other means, Hill said. "They could not revive her and tragically, she died."

...

"There are many people that are able to get handcuffs around their back and get them up and around," Hill said. How the handcuffs "got placed on that neck area ... we don't know yet."

...

Airport workers who witnessed the arrest told the Daily News that Gotbaum was screaming, "I'm not a terrorist! I'm a sick mom! I need help!"

...
I believe the sick part. For some men, though, there is nothing scarier than a woman out of control.

While I have never been handcuffed, I am positive that I could not get my cuffed hands over my head. It would take the skill of a contortionist to do that, but such people do exist. It is difficult to imagine why a delayed departure could cause such trauma to a person. She clearly would have been better off just taking the later flight and taking a deep breath.

  1. Those exempt Upper West Siders are above and beyond the law, as they are taught during lives cutting corners. The woman was obviously out of her mind & anyone screaming to get on a plane should be subdued. Maybe tazering this bi-yotch might have saved her life?
