'Why don't you love me like you used to do?'
Hank Williams had a big hit with that line which was followed by "Why do you treat me like a warn out shoe?" Anne Applebaum asks a similar question about traditional allies who appear to be less fond of us. I think she focuses too much on us and not them. Liberalism and socialism has made many of them weaker while our rejection of those values has made us stronger. Those who ask the question seem to think it would be better is we were all weak together.
The fact is I am not so keen on some of the Euro's either. That was more true before recent elections have returned some sanity to France and to some extent Germany. However, it would be a mistake to judge allies just on these guys. The eastern Europeans have been exceptionally supportive. I like them a lot better now that they are not communist.
One other factor that should be considered is that as much as these people grouse about Iraq, non of them want us to make the kind of exit that the Democrats are demanding. Now why would the Democrats want to alienate our allies by doing something so counterproductive?
