Has internet shopping become the new national mall?

Many major chains find themselves victims of a problem of their own making, having elbowed their way into so many locations that the United States, with more retail square footage per capita than any other nation, is “overstored.”
The synergy of mall shopping is now more convenient for some by going to Amazon or other online shopping experiences.  Malls were already seeing problems by the late 1980's before internet shopping exploded.  For items that can be inexpensively shipped, the internet is just easier.
