Automakers deal with California challenged by DOJ

Washington Post:
Justice Dept. launches antitrust probe of automakers over their fuel efficiency deal with California

Separately, the Environmental Protection Agency and Transportation Department notified California that the state’s agreement with the four automakers on mileage targets “appears to be inconsistent with federal law.”
I raised this point when the deal was announced.  While there was no inhibition on the automakers make their vehicles more California friendly, they could not enter into an agreement that all of them would do it.  That smacks of an agreement in restraint of trade and would be a violation of the antitrust laws.   It also appears to be allowing California to wag the dog when it comes to standards.
