More evidence that renewable energy is a poor investment

Fuel Fix:
NRG Energy reported a $72 million net loss for the third quarter, a sharp reversal of the $171 million gain the power company that both generates and sells electricity reported one year earlier.

The company, which is the biggest seller of electricity in Texas, attributed the loss to selling its renewables business earlier this year. NRG recorded a $354 million loss for the sale of the discontinued solar and wind operations. (Emphasis added.)

NRG's third-quarter revenues increased from $2.7 billion last year to nearly $3.1 billion this year.

If renewable energy is the future why does it keep losing money for investors?  Why does it need government subsidies to be installed?  I think the reason for these problems is it is inefficient and inconsistent.  At best it is a supplemental source of energy at this stage of development.  It is far too unreliable to be the only source of electricity for providers.
