Media 'fact checks' a Cruz joke about Beto backers trying to bring tofu to Cruz's barbecue fundraiser

Resurgent:
The Ted Cruz vs. Beto O'Rourke race has one of the highest profiles among Senate contests this year. And proof of how much attention this election is getting is the fact that PETA decided to protest outside of a BBQ fundraiser for Cruz.

PETA took to Twitter to draw attention to the Texas tofu industry. You can't make this stuff up!
...

And how did Cruz respond? With a grace and generous side of humor, of course! He took the opportunity to thank PETA for being there, and had some laughs at O'Rourke's expense.
Cruz — who knows how Texans pride themselves on making the most tender and flavorful barbecue — welcomed PETA to his event and thanked the group for “helping his campaign.”

He noted that their presence, and their barbecue tofu, “illustrates the stakes (of) the election.”
...

Jonathan Tilove at the Austin American-Statesman, while acknowledging Cruz's comic jab at O'Rourke, still manages to see the poke as having some sort of serious message.
This, even though O’Rourke, as a well-known Whataburger consumer (who Cruz spokeswoman Emily Miller famously referred to as a “triple meat Whatburger who is out of touch with Texas values”) is hardly a poster boy for PETA, whose volunteers were not representing the O’Rourke campaign outside the Columbus eatery, and who were also not saying anything about banning meat.
Keep cracking the jokes, Senator, no matter who laughs or who takes them more seriously than you mean them to be. Too many people in politics take themselves too seriously, so your terrific sense of humor is priceless in Washington (and apparently in Texas too).
The media should keep the snarky "fact checks" coming because they remind people what they do not like about the liberals in the media.  If they can't take a joke they need to find another line of work.  Has Tilove ever tried barbecued tofu?
