Russian mercenaries among those killed on failed attack against US forces in Syria

NY Times:

Dozens of Russians Thought Dead in U.S.-Led Syria Clash

Russians, perhaps dozens, died last week in clashes in Syria with U.S.-led forces. The Kremlin, playing it down, suggested they were mercenaries.
It is a sign of the ongoing weakness of the Assad regime that their own forces consist of several Russian mercenaries.  The war has left Assad at the mercy of Russian and Iranians and those forces have also had significant casualties.

A Russian tank was also reported as destroyed during the firefight.  As many as 200 Russians were reported killed in the operation which looks like a rogue attack.  The Russian military says it had nothing to do with the attack.
