Democrats blowing opportunity for deal on immigration

NY Times:

Trump Takes a Hard Line on Immigration, Imperiling Deal

  • President Trump said last month that he would sign any immigration bill that Congress sends him.
  • But on Wednesday he threatened to veto bills that don’t reflect his priorities, including the construction of a border wall.
Trump's position on immigration is supported by a huge majority of voters.  Those voters want to see a merit-based system and do away with chain migration and the immigration lottery.  The Democrats are trying desperately to thwart the will of the votes.  They are hoping to keep the current system, get Daca and throw a little money toward border security, which they are unlikely to pay for if they retake Congress.  That is a deal that is easy to refuse.

In an attempt to save chain migration the Democrats who used to call it by that name too now are playing a semantics game that must have been thought up by George Lakoff.  It is too cynical for words to suggest that chain migration has something to do with slavery.  It is typical of the bad faith Democrats have shown on the immigration issue.
