California has seen fire and rain and now mudslides

NY Times:

Mudslides in California Blamed for 8 Deaths

Weeks after Southern California was ravaged by wildfires, a torrential rain turned those denuded hillsides and destabilized earth into another deadly natural disaster.
The rains and the mudslides could lead to a regrowth of the vegetation like last year's rains that helped to feed the fires from a few weeks ago.  Meanwhile, a rich state has impoverished itself with wasteful spending on social programs and exorbitant pensions to the point that its infrastructure is crumbling which makes it harder to deal with natural calamities.
