Defending Rep. Wilson's reprehensible conduct because she was friend of the family?

Washington Post:
What John Kelly got wrong about Rep. Wilson and the family of a slain soldier

The White House chief of staff said he was stunned that the Democratic lawmaker was on the “sacred” call between President Trump and the widow of a soldier killed in Niger. But his critique overlooks the family’s long ties with the congresswoman.
The fact that she may have been a long time friend of the family does not excuse her twisting the words of the President to make a bogus political argument.  That the Post would defend her despicable conduct is also reprehensible.  There was nothing rude or lacking empathy in what Kelly and the President said to the family.  It shows ignorance on the part of the congresswoman and the media to try to twist a statement of fact into some heartless statement.

It is probably because most of the reporters and the congresswoman have no concept of why people join the military and put their lives on the line for this country.

I was an executive officer of a Marine rifle company who was wounded in action in Northern I Corps in Vietnam.  I and every Marine in that company knew we were putting our lives on the line and yet we all volunteered to do it for this country.

That is what makes people like Sgt. Johnson special and to suggest that saying so is heartless or cruel is just absurd.  I would add that every member of my family also knew I was volunteering to put my life on the line and to be with other Marines serving this country.

What Congresswoman Wilson did was reprehensible and indefensible.  For the Post to defend her conduct is also reprehensible.  Kelly was absolutely correct in what he said.  There are some issues where the Post needs to put its Trump hatred aside and this is one of them.
