The battle that was the turning point in the land war against Japan in World War II

Washington Post:
The savage fight for Guadalcanal: Jungle, crocodiles and snipers during World War II

On the 75th anniversary of the battle, it is remembered as the first real test for the Greatest Generation, historians say.
The Marines dug in to protect the runway at Guadalcanal and defeated several assaults by Japanese troops.  The battle had many heroes and among them was Marine Corps legend Chesty Puller.

One of the interesting aspects of the battle in the jungle was the Minah birds, I believe, who quickly learned the Japanese equivalent of "Hit the deck" which was yelled when US planes were seen.  The birds started repeating the yell which disrupted the Japenese movement to contact.
