Qatar is a wealthy but weak city state

NY Times:

Trump Suggests He Led Saudis to Isolate Qatar Over Terror Ties

  • “During my recent trip to the Middle East I stated that there can no longer be funding of Radical Ideology,” President Trump said on Twitter. “Leaders pointed to Qatar — look!”
  • Mr. Trump’s tweets have huge potential strategic consequences in the Middle East, where Qatar is a crucial military outpost for the United States.
Qatar would further isolate itself if it retaliated against the US because of  Trump's tweet.  The US state Department appears to have lost its mojo in dealing with states operating against US interests while accepting US protection.  Qatar's actions are also against the interests of other US allies in the region.  Calling them on it is a good thing.  They need us more than we need them,

Qatar has long been rumored as a source of funding and facilitating the funding of terrorist groups in Afghanistan and Syria.  Those operations are no longer acceptable.  The US should stop ignoring their perfidy.

I admit that I do not follow Trump's tweets closely and usually learn about them from the media.  I think he uses them to cut through their filter of events and when you see hand-wringing responses like this they appear to be hitting their intended targets.

It would be interesting to see this kind of sensitivity for the positions of conservative Americans who are routinely subjected to much worse attacks by Democrat politicians and their media cohorts.  The Times, on the whole, has been more professional in its reporting than the Washington Post which has descended into a left wing blog in recent months.
