Businesses narrow their market when they take sides in politics

NY Times:

Shopping Becomes a Political Act in the Trump Era

Handbags, dresses and other ordinary items — and where they are bought — have become politicized, turning shopping decisions into acts of protest for the millions.
This is happening on both sides.  Kellogg is laying off people since its stopping of ads on Breitbart led to a boycott.  Nordstrom's decision on Ivanka Trump's line of clothing led conservatives to cut up their credit cards and sent liberals to their stores.

But why are liberals attacking Ivanka?  She probably is the most liberal member of Trump's inner circle.  Why alienate a potential ally?  I suspect it is because their hatred of Trump and some of his policies overrides common sense.
