Once wedded to oil, Houston economy carries on despite bust
The economy is more diversified now.  The Texas Medical Center in Houston is a city unto itself.  There are also tech jobs now.

The decline in the 1980's was a double whammy, because of the 1986 tax act which impacted investments in real estate at the same time the price of oil was dropping.
