What will this mean for affirmative action?
NY Times:
The big difference was Hispanics I did not know dropped out of school at a high rate. That is still happening today and I think it is more a matter of culture than a failing of the schools. I think the schools were probably better then, even though we did not have many of the amenities they now have. One of my Hispanic friends went on to work for a regional education association and at one class reunion he had looked up test scores and found that our class still had the highest of any to graduate from that high school.
Bilingual education has been a set back to Hispanics who did not speech English in their home. It became a crutch that held them back. Most of the really successful Hispanics spoke English like it was their primary language.
I think we are already seeing Hispanics blend in with the Non Hispanic whites and that will only increase over time. While they do have a tendency to be tribal in some areas, they are assimilating. The illegal Hispanic population has been less likely to assimilate.
I can recall when the stereotype of Hispanics was that they were lazy. That has been the opposite of my experience. They are some of the hardest working people I know. If they show the same dedication to adapting to the American culture, they will see a lot of success for generations.
BTW, the black population would be significantly larger were it not for the disproportionate number of black pregnancies that are aborted.
I went to high school in the lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas where Hispanics out number whites about two to one and you could count the blacks in the town on one hand. If anything the Hispanic population of the area has grown more. Since everyone in town went to the same high school it was a pretty blended population for the most part. Most of my Hispanic friends went to to colleges like many of the whites.White Births No Longer Majority in U.S.
Non-Hispanic white births are no longer the majority in the United States, census data released on Thursday showed.
