Perry only candidate courting gun owners in Iowa

...
Dave Funk, an activist who helps run the county Republican Party in the Des Moines area, has been advising the candidates to reach out to gun owners. But he said sportsman Web sites and online hunting venues remain largely untouched by the presidential campaigns.
Albrecht is just as surprised by the lack of outreach to that coalition. “It’s a tremendous oversight,” he said. “Gun owners are voters.”
Rick Perry’s campaign seems to have gotten the message. This week the campaign sent between 50,000 and 100,000 Iowa Republican gun owners a mailer (obtained by RealClearPolitics) featuring Perry in hunting gear.
“Freedom starts with the right to self-defense,” it reads, noting that Perry scored an A-plus rating from the National Rifle Association.
The flyer also describes Perry as a farmer, hunter, Eagle Scout, Air Force pilot and constitutional conservative. It goes into more detail about his roots and ticks off his record on gun rights in Texas. At this point, he’s the only candidate trying to connect with gun owners; he and Santorum were the only two who showed up to Iowa Rep. Steve King’s pheasant shoot in November.
Perry isn’t railing about Second Amendment rights on the campaign trail, though, instead focusing on his 11 years as governor of Texas and creating more than 1 million in jobs while the rest of the country lost them. He’s sticking to the message that will resonate with the bulk of voters in this economic climate, but is still communicating with those who can appreciate that he is one of them when it comes to guns.
...
Perry's strongest asset is still his jobs message, but he is appealing o a group that is being ignored by other candidates and that may help him swing a few caucus goers.

  1. I think Ron Paul has made his position on gun rights very clear for years and years. He already has demonstrated a strong pro-gun position. Just check out the Gun Owners of America Sept 2011 comments on Ron Paul. He has a perfect voting record on gun rights legislation, going as far back as 1968. No one of the candidates even comes close. Certainly not Newt Gingrich.

Rep. Ron Paul of Texas has a perfect voting record on Second Amendment issues. He has sponsored legislation to repeal most gun laws dating back to 1968 -- as well as, introduced legislation to get the U.S. out of the anti-gun United Nations.

Ron Paul has an A+ rating with Gun Owners of America.
