Houston Mayor's immigration policy is big issue with police

Houston Chronicle:

...

In a letter to White, Gary Blankinship, president of the Houston Police Officers Union, called last week’s slaying of veteran officer Henry Canales a “trifeca failure” of federal, state and city government to protect citizens and police officers from criminal illegal immigrants.

White responded with a news conference Thursday to make clear there would be no change in the department’s policy on illegal immigrants.

...

The union asked White to order Chief Hurtt to drop the 1993 general order prohibiting Houston police from questioning residents about their immigration status, or reporting them to immigration agents.

White countered that Houston police now are inquiring about the immigration status of those arrested and booked into jail, and are seeking fuller access to federal immigration databases.

“I’m frustrated whenever any officer dies, but I would urge people not to judge the many by the actions of the few,” said White, who noted that more crime is committed by citizens than by noncitizens. “And understand our police officers are doing what their job is — arresting people so they can be convicted.”

There was also a dispute over the number of officers. I think this issue will haunt Mayor White in his run for the US Senate if he does not get it resolved. The murder of police officers by illegal aliens is a potent issue with the public as well as police officers. What he is suggesting is a halfway measure on dealing with immigration status. It appears to be the minimum that the open borders crowd will find acceptable. Doing the minimum is not going to be acceptable to most voters.

  1. Although it is terrible that an officer was killed, we can't just go deporting all illegal immigrants without considering personal situations and circumstances. My husband is an immigrant who is a perfectly upstanding citizen and father of 4. If he was to be deported, my children's lives would be shattered. My life would be shattered. We have to think about the lives that will be destroyed by a fast fix policy that does not consider the American roots that long time immigrants have here.
