Left complains about playing defense
E.J. Dionne thinks that Rush Limbaugh and Newt Gingrich have seized control of the news cycle and the media.
Actually he is quite wrong, and his complaint sows a lack of understanding of his own profession.
News is largely dictated by conflict. When critics of whatever administration is in power say something that is interesting or provocative, the medias reaction is to publish and seek a response from those who are on the other side. When the Bush administration was in power, the provocative comments came mainly from Democrat politicians but the media reacted in the same way.
If anything Republicans seem reluctant to play the media, but people like Rush Limbaugh and Newt Gingrich like to speak out on the issues and understand the consequences of doing so. Dionne should not be surprised.
Meanwhile, Newsmax reports:
I don't think they and Dionne are on the same page.
