Tax breaks for businesses losing money?

Reuters:

The U.S. government could provide tax breaks for newspapers or allow them to operate as nonprofits to help the struggling business survive, Sen. John Kerry said Wednesday.

Kerry, a Massachusetts Democrat, said Congress can help the industry hit by a collapse in advertising revenue, debt that is getting harder to repay and the drift of print subscribers to free online news websites.

...

Kerry must not have given much thought to this suggestion because companies that are losing money don't have income to tax. In fact my guess is that companies like the NY Times and the Washington Post are already clawing back taxes paid in previous years. As for operating as a non-profit, they are already doing that notwithstanding any designation as such.

What these businesses need is revenue. Their challenge is finding away to get it in a changing environment. Unless the government is going to start paying for public announcements, it does not have a real answer right now.
