Obama continues to use false premise in argument for closing Gitmo
NY Times:
He is ignoring the wishes of the voters in pushing this bad decision and insulting our intelligence by his moral preening. Dick Cheney eloquently makes the case for our Gitmo policy in a post below, I think he makes a better case than Obama.
President Obama said on Thursday that his administration wants to transfer some detainees from the Guantánamo Bay naval base in Cuba to highly secure prisons in the United States, and that doing so will in no way endanger American security.Reiterating his determination to close the prison at Guantánamo Bay, in the face of growing Congressional pressure to keep it open, the president said what has gone on there for the past eight years has undermined rather than strengthened America’s safety, and that moving its most dangerous inmates to the United States is both practical and in keeping with the country’s cherished ideals. We should also keep in mind that no one has escaped from Gitmo, and the only way their being there may have undermined our war effort is that liberals have false made it out to be a hell hole. It is a well run humane detention facility that is an appropriate place to keep terrorist. It would be much easier for their fellow terrorist to attack facilities in the US than the facility in Gitmo.
“As we make these decisions, bear in mind the following fact: nobody has ever escaped from one of our federal ‘supermax’ prisons, which hold hundreds of convicted terrorists,” the president said. “As Senator Lindsey Graham said: ‘The idea that we cannot find a place to securely house 250-plus detainees within the United States is not rational.’”
