Gitmo has Democrats in a bind

With a recent Rasmussen poll showing an overwhelming 75 percent of Americans opposed to moving any terrorists into the United States, Republicans are turning the controversy into an incendiary campaign issue against House and Senate Democrats. A typical GOP broadside put out by House Republican leader John Boehner:

"Imagine waking up on a Saturday morning, sitting down for breakfast, and seeing an op-ed in your hometown newspaper where your local congressman lays out the welcome mat for terrorists such as Khalid Sheikh Muhammad, the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, and Abu Zubaydah, who personally trained some of the 9/11 hijackers."

That's what Democratic Rep. Jim Moran of Virginia did in a Washington Post op-ed approving of a plan to try the terrorists in a federal courtroom in Alexandria. "I am confident that Alexandrians will stand strong as they always have: gritting their teeth, stiffening their spines," Moran wrote.

That's not what Alexandria's mayor, William Euille, thinks. Two months ago, he said the city just across the Potomac River would be "absolutely opposed" to the idea.

One by one, the National Republican Congressional Committee has been lobbing similar political broadsides at key House Democrats in their districts, challenging them to "take a stand" on the issue. The headline on a typical press release sent into Democratic Rep. Chet Edward's district: "Edwards fails to protect Texans from getting terrorists as neighbors."

Edwards has been able to persuade the conservative Republicans in his district to support him despite his support for liberals like Pelosi and Obama. This is an issue which he will probably break from them on. He has a keen judgment for self preservation so he will probably oppose giving the Gitmo alumni scholarships at Texas A&M.

While the Democrats initially opposed funding the closing of Gitmo, it was put back into the appropriation bill, which should make for a tough vote for people like Edwards. I think the Senate will kill the closing for now.

Closing Gitmo has always been more about getting PR for liberals than about common sense or national security. The GOP should hammer Democrats on the closing and also on bringing terrorist into the US.

Drones appear to be replacing jets for many operations.  The Russia-Ukraine war is an example of that.  Drones are often hard to detect and can be used for intelligence operations as well as for attacking enemy targets.  It would not surprise me to see drones engaging other drones in combat.  They also cost much less than manned fighters.

Apple's huge investment in US including Texas facility

Blaze: Apple announced a $500 billion commitment to infrastructure in the United States over four years, its largest commitment to domestic spending to date. Apple said it will expand teams and facilities in Arizona, California, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, Texas, and Washington as part of its new spending. With a new facility in Houston, Texas, Apple will reportedly double its investment in advanced manufacturing along with increasing investments in AI and silicon engineering. The company said in a press release that the Houston facility will produce servers to support Apple Intelligence, the "personal intelligence system that helps users write, express themselves, and get things done." ... The Texas facility will be for advanced technologies.   Texas has become a place that is very supportive of the tech industries.  Austin and Houston have seen much of the tech growth in the state.  Texas universities have been active in the AI field.
