Blogger conference in Austin
This year's blogger conference for conservatives was another outstanding effort by Peggy Venable and her staff at Americans For Prosperity.
Gov. Rick Perry spoke on what makes Texas number on in job creation, exports and home for the Fortune 500. Texas has become the showplace for conservatism and success while California has shown the failure of liberalism. The Governor was not knocking other states that Texas competes with for business, but I think it is important to our national debate to distinguish between conservatism that works and liberalism that does not.
The new face of political news in Texas comes from bloggers like James Bernsen from Texas Republic News and Will Lutz of the Lone Star Report. Here is Bernsen's report on the conference with photos of the Governor and others. Links to Texas conservative blogs are here. With the cutbacks in coverage by the major media, these resources are probably your best for finding out what is going on in Austin on a consistent basis. The David Guenthner at Texas Public Policy Forum is also a great resource for news and commentary on state issues.
While Austin and the State Capitol looked clean and spiffy despite the legislature being in session it is clear that Democrats are still doing all they can to thwart democracy by opposing a Voter ID law. Their argument is circular. They claim that there is no evidence of voter fraud while blocking efforts such as voter ID that would uncover it. They also claim that it would block some groups who don't have IDs from voting, but if they can register these people to vote, they can also help them get IDs.
The evidence of voter registration fraud has been significant, with numerous indictments of ACORN workers. It is so rampant that the organization should be investigated for RICO violations.
Finally, one of the great things about the gathering of bloggers was the opportunity to see the passions that motivate people to blog. Be it the Tea Party Movement, which was well represented by grass roots bloggers, or concern about the abuse of estate property or local taxes, there are people using blogging to make a difference.
