Aid told Pelosi about waterboarding of Zubayduh
CNN:
What these disclosures make clear is that much of her rhetoric against the enhanced interrogation technique is rank hypocrisy. Readers of this blog know that I have no problem with causing terrorist discomfort if that is what is needed to get information to save lives. Apparently Pelosi did not either until it became a political problem with the Democrats kook base.
These revelations will inconvenience the Democrat high dudgeon show trials they wanted to use against Bush administration officials. Ironically, that is probably a good thing for the Democrats, because voters would rather see terrorist discomforted than Americans killed too.
Fox reports that Republicans are trying to turn the show trials into an investigation of what the Democrats knew at the time, but that the CIA has so far refused to disclose notes of the conversations. That should not stop the GOP from pushing for a subpoena if hearing are held on the subject. These hearings are looking like a bigger debacle for the Democrats than the Ollie North testimony.
The Hill reports that Sen. Graham has said that Pelosi should testify before the Senate committee studying the interrogations.
A source close to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi now confirms that Pelosi was told in February 2003 by her intelligence aide, Michael Sheehy, that waterboarding was actually used on CIA detainee Abu Zubaydah. This reason for not objecting is nonsensical. It should not even pass the giggle test. This appears to contradict Pelosi's account that she was never told waterboarding actually happened, only that the administration was considering using it.
Sheehy attended a briefing in which waterboarding was discussed in February 2003, with Rep. Jane Harman, D-California, who took over Pelosi's spot as the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee.
This source says Pelosi didn't object when she learned that waterboarding was being used because she had not been personally briefed about it -- only her aide had been told.
