The 60th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift

The BBC has a video tribute to the airlift that kept the people in the free section of Berlin from starving.

I have been listening to Andrei Cherny's The Candy Bombers audio book which provides a lot of new data on the air lift and those who made it happen. As the Russians cut off ground transport into Berlin it was almost by accident that the airlift grew from a few planes bringing in supplies that were in no way adequate to feed the people and grew into an operation where planes were landing every two minutes as the US pulled in aircraft from around the world for the mission.

It is a very good book if you are curious about the airlift and the beginning of the cold war. While the BBC video is a brief glimpse of events surrounding the airlift, it may wet your appetite for The Candy Bombers.
