Name that party--Hempstead officials indicted

Houston Chronicle:

FBI agents today arrested Hempstead's mayor pro tem and a city alderman on charges of accepting $13,000 in bribes in exchange for steering federally-funded demolition work to a contractor.

Larry Wilson, 42, the mayor pro tem, and Paris J. Kincade Jr., an alderman, appeared in handcuffs this afternoon before U.S. Magistrate Judge Calvin Botley. Botley agreed to appoint an attorney for Wilson. Kincade said he would hire an attorney.

A federal grand jury returned a sealed, five-count indictment against the two men Thursday. It was unsealed today following their arrest, officials said.

The indictment states that an unidentified contractor paid $10,000 to Wilson and $3,000 to Kincade in 2007 in exchange for their influence in putting the contractor on an approved vendor list for the city.

The contractor, a cooperating witness, received four contracts to demolish buildings in Hempstead later that year, the indictment states.

During their court appearance, Wilson was identified as a security guard for Prairie View A&M University. Kincade said he works for the university as a photographer.

Hempstead's claim to fame for several years was having the largest Chevy truck dealership in the world. It also has a large concrete statuary business. It is roughly 5o miles northwest of Houston on Highway 290 going toward Austin. Prairie View A&M is a predominately black school that is near Hempstead. My guess is that both are probably Democrats.

Hempstead had another brush with fame a few years ago when almost the entire cheerleader squad revealed they were pregnant.
