Pakistan finally accepts US special ops trainers
CNN:
About 30 U.S. military personnel are training members of Pakistan's Frontier Corps on how to fight Taliban and al Qaeda militants in Pakistan's tribal regions, according to several U.S. military sources. This is a small step toward what is really needed. Pakistan has been far too reluctant to take advantage of the training the US special ops teams can provide top help them fight the Taliban and control their border. The reluctance is irrational. It is probably based on the ethnic resistance to outsiders as oppose to some legitimate fear of the US trying to take over Pakistan. We wouldn't want to do that anyway. Even if the US had any imperial designs, Pakistan would not be worth the effort. What Pakistan needs to do is reassert its sovereignty over the tribal areas. If it can do that the US will be happy to leave it alone. The Pakistanis trained by the U.S. contingent -- which includes Army Special Forces troops -- will in turn become trainers for Frontier Corps troops on the front lines fighting the militants, the sources said.
Pakistani Lt. Col. Attique Rehman confirmed the same details to CNN on Saturday.
Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said on Wednesday that U.S. military trainers have been in Pakistan and the mission "has been stepped up, but it still remains very, very small."
