The McCain Obama debate

Obama seems listless in the debate this evening. McCain was energetic and seemed to have some ideas for the economy that caught Obama off guard. Whether he could be t the mortgage buyback deal done is another question and the cost seems to be beyond his budget priorities. His argument about stabilizing the house prices is interesting, but I think that could be done without having to renegotiate mortgages.

McCain has a better health care program, but needs to find a better way to explain it. I saw where some people in focus groups thought Obama addressed their concerns on health care, but I had the opposite effect. Obama's control freak policy just strikes me as a terrible idea.

Obama did continue the Democrats' big lie about deregulation being responsible for the mess they made by over regulating financial institutions and forcing them to make bad loans and then refusing the rein in Fannie and Freddie. The Democrats over regulation of the energy industry has also made us more dependent on foreign sources of energy. Their anti drilling anti nuke policy is a disgrace to common sense.

Mitt Romney did suggest that the money for redoing the mortgages was in the $700 billion authorization for the bailout.

I thought that Obama did not look like a leader and he did not project the charisma that he did back in the primaries. His halting uhhs and ahs have become annoying.

  1. I don't typically watch debates, I listen to them on the radio. I want to hear the candidate's responses without visual distraction.

I thought Mccain handled himself well on several questions. The mortgage re-negotiation idea was interesting. He should have mentioned his early support for the FDIC revisions. I thought it was also important that he mentioned the campaign contributions Obama received through Freddie Mac, although he could have been more specific on the opposition that the democratic leadership provided to the overall reform issue.

He must do a better job of tying energy into the economic argument. Pointing out the cost of energy and the market indices at the start of 2007 might go a long way to drawing a contrast between that time and the present.

Obama continues to worry me on Foreign policy issues, and he appeared to contradict himself on several occasions. It's almost as if he hasn't reached consensus in his own mind on what constitutes an appropriate use of force. Genocide? Treaty obligations? Paper-rock-scissors?

Overall, I think Mccain did fine. Im sure Obama's supporters are wishing the election were held this week, and not next month.
