Romney swings Michigan for McCain

Robert Novak:

THE principal reason why former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has climbed to the top of Sen. John McCain's wish list for vice president is the possibil ity that he could bring Michigan's 17 electoral votes to the Republicans for the first time since 1988.

Private polls show Romney could make all the difference in Michigan. A McCain-Romney ticket carries the state by a moderately comfortable margin. With any other running mate, McCain loses Michigan.

...

In a race as tight as this one that makes a huge difference. In recent years the VP has not made that much difference. You have to go back to the 1960 race when Lyndon Johnson carried Texas for Kennedy to see that big a difference. I haven't seen any polling on Massachusetts recently, but Obama's pal, Governor Deval Patrick, is deeply unpopular and Mitt might make a difference there too.
