Obama's "strategic vision" in Iraq
This is from a Jan. 8, 2008 Washington Post Editorial:
...So the guy that was so "smart" about Iraq in 2002 was dead wrong in 2007 and lied about it in 2008 when he was still dead wrong. He was also dead wrong about Anbar's awakening movement which actually began before the 2006 election. He should pay a political price for being this wrong and inept and for lying about his previous positions. Hat tip to Larwyn and Director Blue.
... Mr. Obama led the way, claiming that Sunni tribes in Anbar province joined forces with U.S. troops against al-Qaeda in response to the Democratic victory in the 2006 elections -- a far-fetched assertion for which he offered no evidence.
Mr. Obama acknowledged some reduction of violence, but said he had predicted that adding troops would have that effect. In fact, on Jan. 8, 2007, he said that in the absence of political progress, "I don't think 15,000 or 20,000 more troops is going to make a difference in Iraq and in Baghdad." He also said he saw "no evidence that additional American troops would change the behavior of Iraqi sectarian politicians and make them start reining in violence by members of their religious groups."...
