A date for Iraq withdrawal in context
The Washington Post says the candidates are "refining" their stance on Iraq. It appears to be confusing McCain's resistance to a withdrawal date before victory to his acceptance of one post victory. This "inconsistency" appears to be a device to excuse Obama's recent equivocations on his own Iraq stance. Now that it looks like we might win, the urgency of an all out retreat seems to have left Obama's agenda.
What is much more important is what the proposals of both were last year in determining their judgment. Obama's prescription would have been a disaster for the US and the Iraqis. It would have turned over Iraq to the terrorist. McCain on the other hand had been pushing for years for the strategy that won the day in Iraq and handed al Qaeda its biggest strategic defeat in the war.
Our victory in Iraq has discredited the al Qaeda ideology in ways that few could have imagined a year ago. Radical Islam is in retreat throughout the Muslim world as a result of al Qaeda's defeat in Iraq. Obama and the Democrats would have given al Qaeda a victory that would have made our war effort last much longer and be much more costly.
The bottom line is that McCain was right about Iraq and that has resulted in a victory that will free our troops up much sooner than anyone expected. There is a huge difference in bringing them home as winners than bringing them home as losers and the Wahsington Post should be able to grasp that difference.
