Phony myth?
The headline is over Maureen Dowd's column today. It is surprising the editors of the Times would put redundancy in a headline. Dowd is trying to discredit an observation made by Karl Rove about Obama.
Obama got this reputation with his speech to Democrat fat cats in San Francisco when he spoke condescendingly about voters in small town Pennsylvania. He also got it when he responded to a question in Iowa about farm prices by talking about the price of arugula at Whole Food. Does she really think that W would talk that way? Isn't she one of those who have been saying he doesn't sound educated?
Obama has earned his reputation for elitism. It is not a myth and the only phony is Obama himself.
...Since W does not smoke or drink it does not sound much like him at all. He is also a person who likes to engage people in conversation and does not look down on him. Where has Dowd been for the last eight years. It is safe to say she probably was not at too many parties with W.“Even if you never met him, you know this guy. He’s the guy at the country club with the beautiful date, holding a martini and a cigarette that stands against the wall and makes snide comments about everyone who passes by.”
Actually, that sounds more like W.
...
...Would you believe an arugula sandwich? How is this for another myth--"rich white conservatives?" Rove may become wealthy, but right now he is a classic nerd political operative who has been working for the government for several years. But his insight was much better than Dowd's.
Rove is trying to spin his myths, as he used to do with such devastating effect, but it won’t work this time. The absurd spectacle of rich white conservatives trying to paint Obama as a watercress sandwich with the crust cut off seems ugly and fake.
