Most people think Democrats want to take us in wrong direction
That is not the explanation the NY Times puts on their latest survey but it is a logical conclusion since it showed up after the Democrats took over Congress and after they are favored to win the White House. I am surely not the only person who think they are trying to take us on the wrong track.
But, that is the problem with this kind of survey. It is like satisfaction surveys with the war in Iraq. They do not distinguish between the wimpy leftest who want to cut and run and the real patriots who want to do more to win. Now there is a sentence to send the left side into apoplexy. It might even get into the "can you believe he challenged our patriotism" links on the kook web sites. To be kind, I could just describe them as the those ignorant of warfare in general and counterinsurgency warfare in particular. If they want to think there is patriotism in retreating from a war we are winning they are pretty hopeless anyway. If they think we are losing it is just more evidence they do not know anything about warfare are the facts on the ground in Iraq.
Then there is the Democrat plan to raise taxes when the economy is slowing down. That is a pretty clear signal that they are on the wrong track. Somehow the Times overlooked that one too.

I don't believe the desire to spend money for urgent needs here at home is inconsistent with "real patriotism."
ReplyDeleteNor is the desire to rein in this hugely expensive government spending project that will be paid for by taxes on our children and grandchildren.
The article would also be more informative if the author defined what it means to win this war. That would help people think their positions through in more depth.
Whatever your views on the probability of failure and success on different goals (the list of goals for this war to accomplish has been disturbingly long and mutable), it will be increasingly difficult pursuing the war without gaining stronger public support for it.
This is unlikely to be accomplished by insulting people who hold a different perspective.
