Clinging to the wrong stereotype
Pigs may fly today, because I just read a Krugman column that has a few good points when it comes to Obama's bitter problem. He still is a Democrat hack on issues, but on the stereotypes he gets it right for the most part. Krugman has a stereotype of his own that he clings to about the south and the civil rights movement.
He is wrong on several levels about why the south has gone from solid Democrat to solid Republican. When the south was solid Democrat, Democrats still believed in a strong national security agenda. When they went soft on national security the south went to Republicans. That this happened after the civil rights events is more coincidence than Krugman can accept, but that is because he can't accept that Democrats are wrong on national security so he would rather call southern whites racist and bigots.
Many southern Democrats may have put up with Democrat liberalism in order to keep segregation. Once segregation was no longer an issue, there was no longer a reason to put up with the liberalism. All that really means is they were no longer bound to the Democrats by segregation. It does not mean they did not accept the changes caused by the civil rights legislation.
Liberals just can't get passed their stereotype of the southern voter and they will keep losing elections in the south because they can't.
