'No mail until the morale improves'
Speedier delivery of morale-boosting mail from home will be a major topic for Prince Harry on his return from Afghanistan.When I was out in the bush in Northern I Corps Vietnam, mail was a high priority item. I usually get letters from home within a week or so of their being sent. It usually came in with the evening resupply choppers.
Describing the current distribution system as "pants", he said he received a Christmas card from his father in February, two months after the Prince of Wales sent it.
Letters from home, like the one he treasures from his brother William, telling him how proud their mother Diana, Princess of Wales, would be of him serving his country, make a huge difference, he said.
At large bases, with email, internet and regular mail, there are no problems. In remote outposts or out on reconnaissance work in the desert it is different.
When a group of journalists arrived at a grid reference in a Chinook helicopter last week, Harry's first question was: "Have you brought any post?"
