Liberals back in play in Texas?

Mimi Schwartz says so in a NY Times op-ed. She is wrong. They have not been in charge in Texas since well before George Bush and Karl Rove drove Democrats from statewide offices. What really happened is that most of the conservative Democrats switch parties because they were embarrassed to be associated with liberals. That has not changed for the most part.

Democrat's best hope for a revival in Texas is not on the ballot this year. Mayor Bill White in Houston has been the most effective Democrat in the state in recent years and he might be capable of a competent campaign for statewide office if he chooses to make a race.

Despites any problems the GOP has had in the state legislature, there is no Democrat leadership that looks like it could do a better job and certainly no liberals who will admit to it anyway.

I suspect that Schwartz is just giddy to be getting some attention from national Democrats who make local Democrats suddenly feel important. Those feelings will pass after today, when they go back to ignoring Texas because they know they can't win here in November.
