Brits don't understand Texas History
The Sunday Independent has this headline on Texas Independence Day.
I suppose that is suppose to mean she is engaging in a futile battle she can't win. It misses the point of the battle and it insults Texas history. Wars are many times about time and sometimes about real estate. The battle at the Alamo was about buying time for the Texas army to maneuver and avoid contact with the Mexican army before it was ready. The same can be said for the battle at Goliad.
At San Jacinta Sam Houston attacked a tired Mexican army during nap time, routed them won independence for this great state. If Santa Anna were a smarter general he would have left a small force to isolate the Alamo while he pursued Houston's army. He was not and the forces at the Alamo bought the time needed for Texas to win.
Whether Sen. Clinton wins or loses on Tuesday, it will have little to do with the Alamo.
The Texas Declaration of Independence was signed in Washington, Texas at a crossing on the Brazos river a few miles from my place. We haven't had that much excitement since.
