Texans put McCain ahead of Democrats
CNN:
Texans appear poised to favor Republican front-runner Sen. John McCain over either of the Democratic candidates for president in the general election, a CNN/Opinion Research Poll released Thursday shows. The poll probably understates McCain's lead in Texas. It also demonstrates how misleading polling on the Iraq has been and is. It says that 61 percent oppose the war in Iraq, yet the anti war candidates can get vote projections in the low to mid 40's. That lower number probably represents those who want to lose the war, and McCain's total reflects those who want to win the war. If the pollsters would frame the question that way it would be a better predictor of voting patterns.Assuming McCain is the Republican presidential nominee, 52 percent of poll respondents said they would vote for him, compared with 44 percent for Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, the current Democratic front-runner.
New York Sen. Hillary Clinton fares slightly worse, with 42 percent, compared with 55 percent for McCain.
The results are not a surprise, said CNN polling director Keating Holland. "Texas is a pretty red state."
