Real reconciliation in Iraq

Captain's Quarters:

Earlier this week, the leading Shi'ite cleric in Iraq issued a fatwa that has largely gone unnoticed by the world media, but could have an impact on reconciliation and the political gridlock in Baghdad. Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani forbade the killings of Sunnis by Shi'ites on Tuesday while meeting with Sunni clerics in an ecumenical council, and called for a renewed sense of Iraqi nationalism to replace sectarian divides in the country (via SCSU Scholars)....

...
So much for that sectarian civil war the Democrats have been complaining about.

Sistani has always been something of a stoic figure for the Iraqi Shia, but the real story is that he issued the fatwa while meeting with the Sunni clerics. There is no word on whether they issued similar fatwas, but the Awakening movement of the Sunnis has suggested similar thoughts. Captain Ed notes how little coverage this fatwa has received in the US media. Perhaps others are ignorant of its significance or perhaps the main stream media wants to keep the illusion of a sectarian civil war alive to aid its friends in the Democrat party.
