Another blow to al Qaeda in Nigeria

Nigerian security agents arrested several men who allegedly had materials for making explosives, and evidence has linked them to the al Qaeda terror network, a senior security official said Monday. The group planned to use dynamite and fertilizer bombs in attacks. It appears that more and more we are getting inside al Qaeda's decision loop. We have seen several arrests and foiled plots in Europe recently as a result of US intercepts of enemy communications. It would not surprise me that the Nigerian attacks were foiled because of similar intelligence. Al Qaeda leadership has to be very frustrated at this point. They are in the process of losing the war they described as their central front against the US in Iraq and their other attacks are failing regularly. The media is unlikely to credit the Bush administration with any accomplishments, but the US is showing a competence that many on the left would like to deny exists. The suspects, all Nigerians, were arrested in the states of Kano, Kaduna and Yobe, located in the country's predominantly Muslim north, said Ado Muazu, spokesman for Nigeria's special state security police.
"Investigations show they have links to the al Qaeda network," Muazu said, without elaborating or saying exactly how many suspects were detained.
Many of those arrested in the current security operation are connected to a Nigerian Taliban group -- formed around students in northeastern Yobe and Borno states -- which came into prominence in 2004 after they engaged the security forces in battles, Muazu said.
