Retreat? Hell We Just Got Here:

...

When advised to withdraw by a French officer at the defensive line just north of the village of Lucy-le-Bocage on June 1, 1918, USMC Capt Lloyd Williams is said to have replied: "Retreat? Hell, we just got here!"

Sadly, Williams would not survive - only 12 days later he would be the first Virginian to die in WWI, and was posthumously awarded the Nation's second highest military honor, the Distinguished Service Cross. A 1907 graduate of VPI (Virginia Tech), Capt Williams hailed from Berryville, Virginia - a small town only 33 miles from my house.

Semper Fi, Capt Williams. Marines ever since have drawn strength from your battle courage. America needs your courage now.

...

In explaining the name of his blog he calls on a piece of Marine Corps lore from World War I. It was in that war that the Germans gave the Marines the nick name "Devil Dogs." Hat tip to Don Surber.
